How to Tell if a Rolex Is Authentic: The Essential Guide
WinThe.watch Β· 2026-07-31
More fake watches are produced every year than genuine ones. The best modern fakes fool the naked eye β but they do not survive six checks any enthusiast can learn. They are the same ones the professionals use.
1. The weight
A genuine Rolex is made of Oystersteel 904L, solid gold or platinum. Counterfeits use light alloys: if the watch feels light for its size, be suspicious. A steel Submariner weighs around 155 grams; many copies stay under 120.
2. The seconds hand
The seconds hand of a mechanical Rolex glides in a smooth sweep of about eight micro-beats per second. If it jumps in dry ticks, it is a cheap quartz movement β and no regular-production modern Rolex uses one.
3. The Cyclops lens
The lens over the date magnifies exactly 2.5 times and sits perfectly centred. On copies the magnification is usually 1.5 or less: the date looks small under the lens. It is one of the fastest, most reliable checks.
4. The engravings
Since 2002 Rolex has engraved a tiny coronet at 6 oβclock on the crystal, near-invisible without a loupe. The rehaut (the inner ring of the dial) carries ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX with the serial number at 6, laser-etched with a precision copies cannot match: look for clean edges and perfect alignment with the indices.
5. The dial printing
Rolex has not printed a crooked letter in a century. Gilded edges on the lettering, identical spacing, lacquer without bubbles. Under a 10x jewellerβs loupe, any blurry or misaligned printing gives the copy away.
6. Paperwork and the seller
The current warranty is a chipped card; older papers carry their own numbering that must match the watchβs serial. And the golden rule of the trade: a watch is only as trustworthy as whoever sells it to you. Demand traceability, an invoice and independent verification.
